The Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is an authorization that an employer in Canada needs to obtain before hiring a foreign worker. It's issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).

An LMIA is required to show that there's a need for a foreign worker and that no Canadian worker or permanent resident is available for the job. The LMIA application process also assesses the legitimacy of the business and the job offer.

This type of application is free of charge for businesses and it's similar as the LMIA application with the exception that the foreign worker is not eligible for a work permit.  

An LMIA for PR can enhance a foreign worker's application for permanent residency by adding points to their Express Entry profile. This can increase their chances of receiving an invitation to apply for Canadian permanent residency.
